Anti-Inflammatory Supplement Stack: Turmeric, Omega-3 & Resveratrol

Chronic low-grade inflammation - often called "inflammaging" - is now recognised as a primary driver of virtually every major chronic disease: cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and accelerated biological ageing. Unlike acute inflammation (which is beneficial and self-limiting), chronic systemic inflammation persists and gradually damages tissues and organs over decades. This guide covers the evidence-based supplement stack for managing chronic inflammation.

Understanding the Inflammatory Pathways

The core molecular driver of chronic inflammation is NF-κB - a transcription factor that controls expression of over 200 pro-inflammatory genes including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and COX-2. Chronically elevated NF-κB activity is found in obesity, insulin resistance, ageing, and chronic stress. Multiple supplements target this pathway specifically.

Omega-3 EPA+DHA

EPA competes with arachidonic acid (AA) for cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes, directly reducing the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. EPA and DHA are also converted to "specialised pro-resolving mediators" (SPMs) - resolvins, protectins, and maresins - that actively resolve inflammation rather than just blocking its production. This distinction is critical: omega-3s address the resolution phase of inflammation, not just the initiation.

High-Bioavailability Curcumin

Curcumin is one of the most potent natural NF-κB inhibitors known. It simultaneously inhibits COX-2 (reducing prostaglandin synthesis) and suppresses multiple upstream inflammatory signalling kinases. Clinical evidence in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, IBD, and metabolic syndrome all show meaningful anti-inflammatory effects at doses of 500 - 1000mg curcuminoids with piperine, 2 - 3x daily.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol inhibits NF-κB activation, reduces TNF-α and IL-6 production, and upregulates Nrf2 - the master regulator of the body's endogenous antioxidant defenses. The Nrf2 pathway activates superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase - the cell's primary defenses against oxidative damage that drives inflammatory signalling.

Synergistic Stack Protocol

Omega-3 (2 - 3g EPA+DHA daily with food) + High-bioavailability curcumin (500mg 3x daily) + Resveratrol (250mg daily). These three compounds target inflammation through complementary mechanisms and have demonstrated additive effects in preclinical models. For athletes, this combination also reduces post-exercise inflammatory burden without blunting adaptive signalling.
